For your final project, you’re required to submit an artist statement alongside your work. But what’s an artist statement?!
An artist statement is an important tool that allows creators to articulate their vision and communicate it to their audience. It can be used to help sell artwork, apply for grants or residencies and provide context at exhibitions. It can also help artists to develop their practice by providing a framework for reflection and self-evaluation.
The statement can be a few sentences or even a few paragraphs long, and it overviews the message or goal of the work.
Why it’s important
- It helps clarify your message to the audience
- It helps a gallery owner or reviewer (like your teacher!) understand your work and explain it to others
- It’s often required when applying to art school or for funding/grants
- It helps draw more interest to the work
What to include
- Why you created the work
- Why you chose the medium you used
- What key elements and principles of design you used and why
- What inspired you to complete this work
- How you expect the audience to react to your work
Writing tips
- Select your tone (emotional, humorous, professional, academic, etc.)
- Write in the first person (‘I completed this work’)
- Make it clear, concise and honest
- Try recording yourself explaining your work out loud, it might help you write a more authentic statement
- Check your spelling and grammar
