Social Studies

By the end of this unit, students will understand basic government structure (local, provincial and federal), understand how the system can be navigated to make change, how policies endure, how to change policy, and how to effectively debate. For the final task in this unit, students will improve upon an existing policy that relates to their theme media, debate the idea as a class, and “pass” the policy as new legislation via the ‘Third Reading’.

It is recommended that students form groups and select the theme media that they are most interested in. They will be using the same theme media/groups throughout the unit. It’s important that students understand that group work and collaboration is important and to learn the skills and patience in working with those you would not normally work with.
