Chat GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is an artificial intelligence language model that is designed to generate human-like responses to text input. It’s one of the largest and most advanced language models currently available, developed by OpenAI using a large dataset of text from the internet.

Chat GPT can be used for a wide range of tasks, including:

  1. Text Completion: Given a prompt or sentence, Chat GPT can generate a coherent and plausible continuation.
  2. Text Generation: Chat GPT can generate coherent and creative text on a given topic, such as writing an essay or a news article.
  3. Chatbots: Chat GPT can be used to develop conversational agents or chatbots that can converse with users in a natural and engaging way.
  4. Language Translation: Chat GPT can be used for machine translation of text from one language to another.
  5. Text Summarization: Chat GPT can be used to summarize long documents or articles into shorter and more digestible summaries.
  6. Sentiment Analysis: Chat GPT can be used to analyze the sentiment of a given text, whether it’s positive, negative or neutral.

Part One

  1. Take a paragraph you’ve written in this class and paste it into Chat GPT. Use the software to generate a continuation of the paragraph.
  2. Discuss how Chat GPT’s continuation relates to the original paragraph. Consider the accuracy and creativity of the generated text.
  3. Revise your original work based on Chat GPT’s continuation, using critical thinking and analytical skills to improve your writing.

Part Two

  1. Divide into pairs or small groups.
  2. Have each group start a conversation with Chat GPT using the themes you’ve been discussing in class.
  3. Ask follow-up questions and use critical thinking skills to engage with Chat GPT’s responses.
  4. After the conversation, each group will report back to the class on what they learned and how their conversation with Chat GPT helped them – or didn’t – develop their thinking on the subject.

Part Three

Discuss the following questions as a class:

  1. What is Chat GPT, and how does it work?
  2. What are some potential benefits of using Chat GPT for writing and critical thinking?
  3. What are some potential drawbacks of relying on Chat GPT for writing and critical thinking?
  4. What are some practical uses of Chat GPT beyond text completion and chatbots?
  5. How might Chat GPT be used to automate certain tasks, and what are the ethical implications of such automation?
  6. In what ways might Chat GPT impact the job market and the future of work?
  7. What are some potential privacy concerns associated with the use of Chat GPT, and how can these concerns be addressed?
  8. What role might Chat GPT and other AI technologies play in education and learning, and how might they transform the way we teach and learn?
  9. How might Chat GPT be used to bridge language barriers and promote cross-cultural communication?
  10. In what ways might Chat GPT and other AI technologies shape the future of society, and what are some potential risks and benefits associated with their development and deployment?
  11. Research the history and development of Chat GPT and other AI technologies, as well as the ethical and social implications of their use.
  • Funnily enough, we used Chat GPT to edit a majority of this lesson. How did it do?
