You’ve been tasked with writing a scientific research proposal, but how exactly do you propose a new science study? Here’s a guide to help:

Cover Page
- Title of the research proposal
- Your name
- Your teacher/supervisor’s name
- Your course code
Introduction
- State the significance of the topic: Where and/or when will this study occur? Is it time sensitive? Who/what does it affect? Who has already been researching the topic (company, non-profit, scientist, etc.)? Why is it important to address the issue? What will happen if it’s not addressed? Are there similar published studies that demonstrate why this study might succeed or create important knowledge on the topic?
- Provide background/context: Who will benefit from this study (scientists, policy makers, local communities, etc)? How much research exists on this topic? What’s missing from the existing pool of research? What new information can be discovered by further researching the topic/issue? Why will it matter?
- State and define your research question
- Identify the method of scientific inquiry (scientific method and/or traditional knowledge)
Literature Review
- Highlight the existing research
- Identify key terms, with definitions
- Demonstrate that there is a gap in knowledge that needs to be bridged
- Prove how the proposed research study will benefit the issue or topic
Research Outline
- Outline how the study will be conducted and across what timeframe
- Determine what tools and resources are required to complete the study (be realistic)
- State who will conduct the study (or who should)
- List who needs to be consulted or interviewed before the study proceeds, or as part of a successful study
- Breakdown possible challenges with the study, or problems the study might encounter
Conclusion
- Summarize the research proposal
- Reiterate the case for why this study needs to be funded and/or conducted
Reference List
- Properly cite all sources and resources (MLA, AMA, etc)
- Show a diversity of sourcing to improve the proposal’s credibility
