Canada at a Crossroads Chapter 1: Social Studies

Divisions and Decision-Making in Canada

Curriculum Connections:

  • Canadian & World Issues – Sustainability and geopolitics
  • Social Studies 10–12 – Decision-making in democratic societies
  • Contemporary Indigenous Studies 12 – Reconciliation and resource use

Big Idea:
Social and political divides influence how Canadians make decisions about the environment and economy.

Learning Objectives:

  • Examine how misinformation and polarization affect democracy.
  • Evaluate competing priorities: economy vs. environment.
  • Consider how Indigenous, rural, and urban perspectives differ.

Activity:
Hold a mock national forum or “citizens’ assembly.”
Students represent different stakeholder groups (Indigenous leaders, industry experts, scientists, youth activists, government officials, etc.) debating a proposed national energy project.
They must find areas of compromise and present a “shared action plan.”
