Canada at a Crossroads Chapter 2: Visual Storytelling

Visualizing Connection and Division

Curriculum Connections:

  • Visual Arts 10–12 – Themes in social and environmental art
  • Media Arts – Visual communication and symbolism
  • Interdisciplinary Arts – Art as a response to real-world issues

Big Idea:
Art can express tension, balance, and unity — giving shape to invisible social and ecological connections.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore how visual metaphors can represent balance, division, or harmony.
  • Communicate complex environmental and social ideas through design.
  • Develop composition, symbolism, and mixed media techniques.

Activity:
Create a “Crossroads Poster”: one half showing economic growth, the other environmental protection, joined by an image or symbol of unity (e.g., a river, handshake, bridge, or tree roots).
Display the class gallery and invite discussion: What does balance look like to you?
